CHAPMAN AND POLICE TEAMS’ IMPRESSIVE RUNS CONTINUE 23-Jul-2010
Chapman Golf Club……..club representatives doing well |
OUTSTANDING club sides Chapman Golf Club and Police Golf Club continued with their impressive form in last Sunday\'s (18 July) round of Harare Province Golf Union (HPGU) B League action at Sherwood Golf Club. The two sides who remain the only unbeaten sides in the division this season, avoided defeat for the seventh successive round, with Police the most impressive after dismissing league debutants Norton Country Club 4-2.
Police are now tied with Chapman at the top of the B League table on 32 points following Chapman\'s 3-3 draw with defending champions The Country Club on the same day. However, Chapman retain top spot on merit as they were the side placed higher prior to the weekend\'s matches.
It could have been so different for Chapman, who, if they had managed to overcome their Highlands neighbours, would have retained at least a two-point lead at the top of the standings as well as their 100 percent winning record. But The Country Club - who have been struggling to stamp their authority in their title defence - put up a spirited fight to emerge with a share of the spoils. That result should be a major confidence boost for the side which remains in ninth position on 17 points.
Also impressive were Royal Harare who chalked up their fourth win of the season when they prevailed 4-2 over Ruwa Country Club. The victory marked the first time Royal had won three successive league matches in this year’s campaign – the side having also beaten Sherwood and Falcon by identical 4-2 scorelines in the June and May rounds respectively. Royal are now in third position on 26 points with their victims this weekend, Ruwa, down to fourth position on 25.
Meanwhile, Borrowdale Brooke recorded the biggest win of the weekend, thrashing Wingate Park 5-1. The mean men from the Brooke are certainly on a ruthless streak, the thumping of Wingate meaning that they, just like Royal, have now won three matches on the spin. In June, they dished out a similar 5-1 bashing on Mount Pleasant while they also beat Norton 4-2 in May.
But the league’s form side has to be Warren Hills who have recovered from a very poor start to the season to post some impressive results in recent months. After losing their first two matches of the season emphatically – a 6-0 whitewash by Police and a 5-1 battering at the hands of Chapman, Warren Hills have been unbeatable.
Having drawn their third match of the season – against Royal Harare, Warren Hills have put together a four-match winning run that culminated in the 4-2 defeat of Sherwood last Sunday. Warren Hills are now the fifth-best performers in the league alongside Norton on 23 points.
The last of the B league matches featured Falcon Golf Club taking on Mount Pleasant Golf Club. As expected, Falcon emerged 4-2 victors over the basement boys who have now lost all seven matches this season. The only consolation that Mount Pleasant can take from this match is that they managed to avoid another whitewash, at least registering two points on the board.
The next round of HPGU B League matches will be played on Sunday 15 August at Norton Country Club.
