CHAPMAN LEAD IN HPGU LEAGUE 05-Jul-2010
Chapman Golf Club…….team leading in the HPGU League |
CHAPMAN GOLF CLUB maintained their unbeaten run in the Harare Province Golf Union (HPGU) B League last week (27 June) with a 4-2 victory over high-flying Ruwa Country Club at Borrowdale Brooke Golf and Country Club. Chapman are now unbeaten in six starts dating back to the season opening fixture on January 31st.
The victory kept the Eastlea-based side a point clear of Police Golf Club on 29 points. For Police Golf Club, who remain the only other side yet to taste defeat this season, the title chase is well and truly on, the Gunhill-based side having managed to claw back another point off Chapman’s lead with a 5-1 thrashing of The Country Club. Police’s impressive 2010 record now stands at 5 wins, one draw and no defeat.
While Police and Chapman are involved in what is fast becoming a two-horse race for the B League championship, reigning champions The Country Club are having a tough time of it. After a poor start to the season, Highlands-based The Country Club looked to have re-ignited their campaign when they hammered Wingate 6-0 in May. But the latest 5-1 reverse at the hands of title-chasing neighbours Police Golf Club brought them back to earth with a thud. Now trailing the league leaders by 15 points, a successful title defence is surely beyond them now.
Meanwhile B League new boys Norton Country Club continue to impress. They may not have the depth in terms of playing resources, but the few they have at their disposal are proving to be quality players. As Chapman and Police were recording wins last week, Norton were following suit, beating struggling Wingate 4-2 to move up one place into fourth position on 21 points. It was Norton’s third victory of the season in six attempts, the other matches having ended in a draw and two defeats.
In the other B League matches, Royal Harare swept to a 4-2 victory over Sherwood Park to move one place up to fifth on the log on 20 points with Sherwood dropping one place down to 10th. On the same day, Warren Hills humbled Falcon Golf Club 5-1 while Borrowdale Brooke thumped their stricken neighbours Mount Pleasant by the same scoreline. For league anchors Mount Pleasant, it was a sixth successive defeat of a terrible season in which they have only managed to win two rubbers in 18 attempts over the course of the six matches their players have been involved in thus far. Mount Pleasant remain rooted at the bottom of the log on paltry four points – some six points shy of their nearest rivals, Wingate in 11th position.
As a result of their 5-1 victory over Mount Pleasant, Borrowdale Brooke climbed two places up to eighth position on 15 points. On the other hand, Warren Hills, 5-1 conquerors of Falcon stayed seventh but are now have the same 19 points tally with their victims from last week Falcon. Falcon, however only stay above Warren Hills on merit.
The next round of HPGU B League action will be played at Sherwood on July 18 2010.
