NORTON KEEN TO CONSOLIDATE POSITION THIS WEEKEND AT RUWA 23-Feb-2010
Ruwa Country Club Golf Estate…. now competes favorably with any course in the country. |
AFTER a sensational debut at Royal Harare Golf Club last month, Harare Province Golf Union (HPGU) A League newboys, Norton Country Club, will have their tails up when they go into battle against Warren Hills this Sunday (28 February) at Ruwa Country Club. The match is one of six A League encounters scheduled for this weekend.
In what should be a cracking tie pitting two in-form sides, Norton will be keen to consolidate their good start to the season against their experienced and unpredictable rivals. Warren Hills, too, will also be confident of a good showing especially following their stunning opening day 4-2 victory over defending champions Wingate Park Golf Club.
At the same time, table-topping Ruwa Country Club will look to stretch their lead at the top when they date former two-time champions Falcon Golf Club. The two teams come into the match on the back of contrasting opening weekend results. While Ruwa were getting off to a flying start as they beat Sherwood 6-0 at Royal Harare last month, Falcon were going down 4-2 to Country Club of Highlands, leaving the Hatfield -based club languishing in an unfamiliar eighth position on the A League log. And with Ruwa having home ground advantage plus the incentive of being top of the log for the second month running while Falcon are looking to bounce back with a bang, the stage is set for what should be yet another gripping encounter.
The other A League fixtures will feature Country Club of Highlands up against seasoned strugglers, Mt Pleasant Golf Club in a tie the former are hugely favoured to win and maintain their winning start to the season. Chapman Golf club date Police Golf Club in a match pitting teams that started the season with defeats last month. Both teams suffered identical 4-2 losses to Borrowdale Brooke and Royal Harare respectively.
In the last of the A League fixtures, Borrowdale Brooke, who stunned Chapman in the opening round in January, will face-off with last season's runners-up, Sherwood. While the men from the Brooke go into the encounter with a spring in their step, their bruised opponents will be seeking a morale-boosting victory to kick-start a season that started in such disappointing fashion last month.
In the B League, the big winners from the opening weekend clash in the highlight of the second round of action at Royal Harare Golf Club. Chapman, who thrashed cross-town rivals Royal Harare 5-1 in their opening fixture last month take on Warren Hills, who hammered Wingate Park 6-0 in their opening match. Both sides will be keen to win this one and gain the early initiative in a championship race that promises to be the most exciting for years.
In the other matches, the other big winners from last month's encounters - Ruwa Country Club and Gunhill-based Police Golf Club date defending champions Country Club of Highlands and Mt Pleasant respectively. Ruwa's clash with Country Club is easily the pick of the two encounters given that Country Club are a proven force in the B League and will be determined to mount a strong defence of their hard-won title. Barring a small miracle, the encounter pitting Police Golf Club against perennial whipping boys Mt Pleasant should be another victory in the bag for Police.
B League debutants, Norton Country Club, who marked their B league debut with a 4-2 loss to Falcon Golf Club date in-form Sherwood who started the season on a high with a 4-2 defeat of defending champions Country Club. The sixth B League match-up on Matchday 2 features Falcon Golf Club taking on Wingate Park Golf Club. The opening matches for both leagues tee-off at 0730 hrs.
