Marc Cayeux was the pick of the Zimbabwean golfers in the R3-million Dimension Data Pro-Am tournament that was held at The Montagu Golf Course, Fancourt last weekend (11-14 February 2010). Cayeux was placed sixth out of 156 golfers in an event dominated by South Africans who occupied nine of the top 10 positions.
In what was a highly competitive tournament, Cayeux posted scores of 70, 72, 69 and 68 for a 10-under 279 total. That earned him sixth position and a R99, 000 cheque. But while Cayeux was pursuing a top placing, the other Zimbabwean golfers failed to make a big impression, with all but Ryan Cairns, failing to make the cut for the final round.
Cairns added a disappointing 79 to his earlier scores of 74, 68 and 73 to eventually finish in a four-way tie for 63rd position on 5-over 294, earning R7, 000 in the process. The other Zimbabwean golfers - Nick MacDonald, Mike Curtis, Tongo Charamba and Ignatius Mketekete fell by the wayside when the cut was enforced after the third round.
MacDonald (72, 79, 71) was in 83rd position on 5-over 222 for the three rounds alongside Curtis who made a treble of 74s. Charamba (71, 74, 78) was further down in 94th on 6-over 224 with Mketekete (76, 78, 76) 134th on 13-over 230 for the first 54 holes.
The tournament was won by South Africa's Darren Fichardt who, according to reports from South Africa, birdied the 18th hole to win by one shot from his countryman, Louis Oosthuizen. Fichardt had rounds of 66, 68, 71 and 68 for a 16-under-273 total and the R443, 000 winner's cheque. Oosthuizen had rounds of 68, 72, 68 and 66 for second place and the R322, 000 prize that went with it.
Another South African, Daniel Greene was placed third on 13-under 276 after rounds of 70, 69, 72 and 65 while the pair of Tyrone van Aswegen and Brendan Grace tied for fourth position on 11-under 278. Van Aswegen had scores of 70, 68, 72 and 68 while Grace shot 68, 69, 68 and 73.
Meanwhile, 11 Zimbabwean golfers will be in action this week in the Telkom PGA Championship that will be held at The Country Club, Johannesburg from 18-21 February. Cairns, Charamba, Cayeux, Curtis and Mketekete are automatic entries for the tournament while Sean Farrell. Julius Kamalizeni, Anyway Katembenuka, Mark MacDonald, Mohammad Mandu and Robson Saurombe will have to play in the pre-qualifying event earlier in the week.
