WINGATE TO HOST JULIUS ROBINSON TROPHY THIS WEEKEND 02-Feb-2010
Wingate Park Golf Club……….traditional home of the Julius Robinson Trophy |
THE 2010 edition of the Juluis Robinson Trophy takes place at its traditional venue, Wingate Park Golf Club, this weekend (6-7 February). Defending champion, Trynos "Sergio" Muradzikwa is seeking to win back-to-back ZGA titles for the first time in his career. The tournament will be played over 36 holes.
Muradzikwa, the highly regarded golfer from Chapman Golf Club, knows very well what he will be up against this time round - what with the outstanding pair of Scott Vincent and Roger Jack leading the list of potential successors to the Julius Robinson throne. And after a disappointing tournament in Bulawayo where he finished outside the top 10 in the Dugmore two weeks ago, Muradzikwa will be hard pressed to bounce back with a bang by winning his second Julius Robinson crown in a row.
Indeed, Vincent ranks as Muradzikwa's biggest threat as well as the tournament favourite given his impressive recent form - the Dugmore victory being the latest in a series of big tournament wins dating back to last year. In last year's edition of the Julius Robinson Trophy, Vincent tied for first place with Muradzikwa but went on to lose the playoff, a memory the youngster will be looking to banish by winning the tournament outright this time.
Jack, too, is a big challenger who has already shown some early promise this year by carrying on from where he left off last year by finishing second in the Dugmore Trophy a fortnight ago. Dark horses to the Juluis Robinson crown include teenage star Dumi Chitengwa, who marked his return to competitive golf with a creditable fourth-place finish in the Dugmore Trophy - a sure sign that this young gun is back in business and out for a kill.
The other potential winners include lanky Chapman golfer, Nyasha Muyambo who finished fourth in the Dugmore in January, national team player David Elijah and Clive Nguru (jr) who was fourth in last year's edition of the tournament.
As usual, golfers from Harare are set to dominate the numbers even though guys like John Sigaba from Manicaland, Murray Parsons and M. Ncube from Bulawayo are expected to compete and seriously challenge for the title.
