| MAROWA STILL AS FIT AS A FIDDLE! | 05-May-2005 |
After the Shumba game at Norton Country Golf Club on Sunday, I sought audience with Marowa just to find out what really made him tick. “I have had one too many for now. Lets meet at 10 at your office tomorrow” and for sure he was there at 10 am sharp.
Marowa is employed by Harare Cleaning Services as a Consultant and he derives his nickname from his other passion, soccer, after playing for the then Salisbury District in the 50s. His love for Dynamos, also known as De Mbare by its fans, is unquestionable and the nickname has stuck on to him like ugly on an ape.
Marowa also used to be a caddie as a means to supplement his income. Then, caddies used to earn 15 cents and sometimes as much as 5 bob (whats that?) for a round of 18 holes. Naturally his passion for golf developed. He remembers clearly, that blacks were not allowed to play at Royal, Police or Chapman Golf Club then. With Anderson Rusike, Lewis Muridzo, Shabani Johnson, Titus Chamunorwa and Gibson Muzadzi, they used
play regularly at Gleneagles Golf Club. Titus Chamunorwa was the President of Gleneagles then.
The lowest handicap he has ever played was 7. The most memorable moment in his golf life is a hole-in-one at Chapman on hole number 17. Pity, he cannot remember the club he used to achieve this feat.
Marowa is very clear on the benefits of playing golf, with physical fitness being a key benefit for him. He agrees that, on a bad day, he “feels it” on the knees after walking more than 7 km for the 18 holes but it is a worthy exercise. He acknowledges the networking, friendship and support from golf peers has been invaluable.
However, the likeable Marowa believes a lot can be done and achieved through golf. Just like everyone else he bemoans the lack of a big tournament like Zimopen and believes those in management of golf should work together for the development of golf in schools and other places.
His parting shot (or is it putting shot!), “play golf, its relaxing, you meet lots of people, you get business from friends, you give business to friends…….” Thanks De Mbare for the chat and we will have more time together soon. |
